A symbol of the American cinema related to bodybuilding, Sylvester Stallone was successful in the 70s and 80s, embodying a triumphant United States and became a part of the Hollywood action stars firmament.

Decades have passed since then and time has left marks on the face of Sylvester Stallone, who is now 71 years old. Even so, he keeps impressing us with his shape, worthy of an Olympic category athlete and his musculature always so well shaped.
Even if it is the caricature of a real brute man who destroys everything that appears on the screen, Sylvester Stallone inevitably makes most of us feel admiration for him.

This is because behind his iron muscles, there is an unwavering courage and determination.

Difficult beginnings

Sylvester Stallone was born on July 6, 1946 in New York. He is the son of Franck Stallone and Jacqueline Labofish. Sylvester Stallone will grow up in a dual culture, since his father is Italian, and his mother is of Ukrainian and French ancestry; both came to the United States pursuing the American dream.

He had 14 expulsions from different schools over 11 years because of his behaviour problems. His future, obviously, was not in a college.

He became passionate about cinema at a very young age and, despite suffering a mild facial paralysis since birth, he moved to Miami to study drama. Sylvester Stallone was a young man who already knew what he wanted and pursued his dreams.

However, at the end of his drama studies, things during his beginnings as an actor were not that simple. He had some participations in movies off Broadway. But no role catapulted him to stardom.
After some time in which he received no work proposal, he stayed at home and accepted an offer to play in an erotic movie, “The Party at Kitty and Stud’s”, just to cover the most basic expenses. His career got deadlocked.

Despite these hard times, Sylvester Stallone never gave up. And instead of waiting for the role that would finally make him famous, he decided to be the architect of his own fate by writing a screenplay in his own image and likeness, inspired by a boxing fight that he attended between Mohamed Ali and an unknown boxer, named Chuck Wepner.  Rocky would soon come into existence.

An unbreakable determination

Hollywood producers showed a great interested in the script of Sylvester Stallone. The only problem is they didn’t want him to play the main character. Instead, they thought about actors like Robert Redford, Burt Reynolds and Ryan O’Neal, who were much more famous at the time. Nevertheless, Sylvester Stallone believed blindly in his creation and, despite receiving a tempting offer of $ 150,000 for the rights to his script, he rejected it.

By dint of perseverance, he eventually fulfilled his dream and finally in 1976 he played Rocky under the direction of John G. Avildsen. Rocky was very well received by the audience and, although shooting lasted only 1 month and had a very low budget, Sylvester Stallone managed the film to win ten Oscar nominations.   This is the beginning of a long saga in which Sylvester Stallone will perform for another six times Rocky’s role (in 1979, 1982, 1985, 1990, 2006 and 2015).

In the early 80s, he put on his combat uniform and played the Rambo, a Vietnam veteran. This was the second triumph of Sylvester Stallone, who managed to restore the image of the United States with respect to the Vietnam War.

In the 80s, Sylvester Stallone played roles in other films as well. However, it was the characters of Rambo and Rocky who most captivated the audience, to such an extent that their other roles went unnoticed.

It must be said that the character of Rocky has similarities with Sylvester Stallone in terms of situations that both went through. They are people who, in their beginnings, had a difficult life, but by force of determination and courage, managed to overcome and achieve success. Rambo, for his part, would have some dark Sylvester Stallone’s features.

Intensive training

From an early age, Sylvester Stallone was passionate about physical culture. During teenage, he was already training in gyms or on the steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum. This practice would allow him to develop and acquire what would be a firm and strong musculature eventually.
Nevertheless, Sylvester Stallone devoted himself to his projects and, to play his roles as Rocky and Rambo, would follow a series of very demanding and intense training.

To have the arms of Rocky or Rambo, would follow an outstanding program, centred mainly in biceps, forearms and triceps. As for the biceps, drills of a series of downward pulls and forearm flexes in the bar, as well as flexions with high and low pulley. With respect to forearms, he performed 25 wrist presses with weights up, then down, sitting on a bench. The series ended with a stationary traction for 2 minutes.

Regarding triceps, he used to begin with a series of 12 explosive bench presses, followed by 25 clips and bombs with the position of both hands close to each other. Session used to end with 1 minute of coating in the bomb position.

Sylvester Stallone combined this routine with boxing sessions and series of rope jumps. Result: in 6 weeks, Sylvester Stallone gained 5 kilos of dry muscles and his biceps reached 45 centimetres in diameter. Nowadays, Sylvester Stallone maintains an exceptional musculature, being the envy of many ones. His physical strength is due mainly to his determination, rigor in his training and perseverance.

Sylvester Stallone pays tribute to growth hormones.

Sylvester Stallone not only consumed growth hormones to gain mass and embody his character John Rambo, but also supports other consumers.

“The human growth hormone (hGH) is absolutely nothing,” said the actor in the columns of Time magazine, adding that those who confuse it with anabolic steroids are simply misinformed.

Since it has turned virtually undetectable, human growth hormone has become a substance widely used in the world of baseball and other sports where doping is commonplace.

“Over the years, testosterone gives me a real sense of well-being,” says Sly. He believes that after 40 years, every man should be interested in it (testosterone), because it improves quality of life. Convinced of this, the actor will meet in ten years with his detractors to make a balance.
