The use of anabolic steroids in sports has experienced a rapid and explosive expansion in recent years. While athletes have been using these products since the beginning of time to improve their performance, the phenomenon was little known. Despite the prohibition of anabolic steroids by sports federations for decades, their use in the world of sports goes on. Somehow, these substances are still the best ones on the market in terms of efficiency. Therefore, it is logical that the athletes who live looking to improve their performance use all available means to achieve their objectives. Numerous studies conducted in the last two decades have revealed the high use of anabolic steroids by athletes in general. Better yet, the statistics contained in the latest report of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) amount to 1,929 anti-doping rule violations (ADRV). These figures refer only to athletes who participated in competitions of all categories.

What are the disciplines that most encourage the use of anabolic steroids?

The latest WADA report reviews the anti-doping rule violations registered in 2015. According to this report, 1,649 athletes tested positive for urine and/or blood. To this number are added 252 violations detected by the intelligence services. According to the report, anti-doping rule violations occur in 85 different sports. We will provide an overview of the use of steroids in sports with statistics by discipline.

  • Bodybuilding and brute force sports :

Obviously, bodybuilding is on top of the ranking with 270 violations. Originally, anabolic steroids were developed for this type of sport. Bodybuilders naturally need these products to overcome their own limits in terms of body weight. In this category of sports, the lifting of weights occupies the second place with 239 violations against 110 attributed to powerlifting. Around 530 out of these violations where committed by athletes that tested positive for the use of anabolic steroids. These sports are very demanding for athletes, what leads them to consume steroid supplements as a reinforcement to quickly improve their performance.

  • Endurance sports and games :

In this category, athletics are on top of the ranking with 242 violations. Then comes cycling, with 200 violations. Apart from these two sports, where more violations were pointed out was in the games. 108 cases for football, 80 reported by Rugby Union, 39 in basketball, etc. There are many other cases of violations in sports such as tennis, volleyball, handball, badminton, golf…

These statistics show that the use of anabolic steroids as the need for endurance and strength in different sports increases.

  • Combat sports :

In this category, boxing is on top with 66 rapes against 57 violations in the fight. Apart from these two sports, violation cases have been observed in many other sports such as Judo, Taekwondo, Karate, Kickboxing, etc. Again, these types of sports require greater strength and great resistance. This situation leaves no choice to fighters, who find everything they need in anabolic steroids.

There is still a significant number of sports in which violations have been reported. The WADA report mentions 85 sports in totalHowever, these cases of violation are only those that the World Anti-Doping Agency has been able to detect. When we look at the procedures used to identify athletes who use doping products, we can think there were athletes who have been able to avoid tests. Indeed, about the 1,929 cases of violations, there are 280 athletes who did not tested positive. They were penalised according to other urine and/or blood tests. This suggests that, if an athlete manages to use anabolic steroids or any other doping product in the most absolute secrecy, it is likely that he passes the tests successfully.

WADA’s preliminary figures on anti-doping rule violations insufficiently reflect the involvement of anabolic steroids in sports. We can see that violations occur highly frequently in sports that require some physical fitness, strength and endurance. This is the case of sports such as bodybuilding, weightlifting, athletics, cycling, football, basketball, combat sports, tennis, etc. We also observe a very high rate of violations worldwide. Athletes may have understood that anabolic steroids are their best resource to improve their performance. Otherwise, violation cases have been found in sports not needing that much strength, such as golf.  All athletes dream of being the best ones in their category and seem to have found a way to achieve it.
